FPA 30 does not recommend venting of Safety Cabinets and advises users to leave vents plugged, unless required to vent by local fire authorities or other applicable laws or regulations. Justrite provides its Safety Cabinets with 2” NPT vent bungs for this purpose if venting is needed.
NFPA 30 advises that if you must vent a Safety Cabinet to the outside, it must be in a manner which does not compromise the safety performance of the Safety Cabinet. Below are noted some general guidelines for designing a Safety Cabinet vent system, but it is strongly advised that the user seek professional engineering advice as every venting situation and facility is unique, as well as applicable building and fire codes. Designing and installing a safe venting system should be done by professionals who understand all requirements.
For Flammables:
So as to not compromise the safety performance of the Safety Cabinet, rigid galvanized steel pipe should be used for venting, and attached to the Cabinet at the 2” NPT threaded bung connections. Any blowers, if needed, should be specified as safe for handling flammable fumes (explosion proof) and should be installed to evacuate fumes using negative pressure (suction).
For Corrosives:
The vent pipe material should be compatible with chemicals being stored and be able to connect to the cabinet at the 2” NPT threaded bung connections. The same consideration should be made for any blower. A blower, if needed, should be specified as safe for handling the applicable chemical fumes and should be installed to evacuate fumes using negative pressure (suction).
